WATER SIDE WORKERS.
ARBITRATION AWARD
fI>KR Press Association.! AUCKLAND, October 9. The Arbitration Court award in the waterside workers’ dispute is practically the same as tire award of 190/, the only alteration made by the Court being the exclusion of tallymen. The fact that the pillaging of cargo had increased since 1907 was a strong reason for not including them. It was their duty to prevent pillage, and they ought to be qnite free in the performance of this duty, from any control or interference on part of the union. The Union Company’s claims in respect of pillage for two years prior to Julv 1907, amouted to £127. In the two years subsequent they amounted to £344 showing an increase of £l/3, Huddart, Parker Company’s figures for the same periods -were £63 and £173, an increase of £llO. The Shaw, Savill. and Albion Company’s figures showed an increase of £133. These figures called for prompt and vigorous action on the part of the union. If pillaging was not done by the members of the union they could, if they wished, afford great assistance in the detection and bringing of offenders to justice.
