COMPULSORY MILITARY TRAINING.
NATIONAL DEFENCE LEAGUES PETITION.
IPf.u Pukss Association.! AUCKLAND, Oct. 11
The National Defence League is circulating a petition for presentation to Parliament, urging legi si atom to take steps to provide for universal compulsory training. The petition states that the people of New Zealand view with alarm the absence of that- general training for borne defence which has been made imperative by the military and naval devices of modern times in both Europe and Asia, and believes that in spite of the sacrifices made by the volunteers of the Dominion, the voluntary system has proved to be inadequate for the purpose intended “Public opinion,” the petition adds, “is consequently strongly in favor of the universal and compulsory training of the youths of the community under conditions which will not interfere unduly with civic life.” The petition is being largely signed.
