CANADIAN SHIPBUILDING.

SOME NEWSPAPER OPINIONS. United Press Association —Copyright. (Received October 11, 9.40 p.m) i OTTAWA, October 11. Harland and Wolff’s representative spent two months prospecting the St. Lawrence for a site'for a dock suitable 1 for 14,000-ton White Star liners. At present, if an accident occurs, the vessel would possibly become a total wreck, because it is impossible to patch her sufficiently to steam to New York. Harland and Wolff state that they do not contemplate an extension of shipbuilding at present. Many .recent casualties in Canada have raised marine insurance rates to a very high figure. The ’’Montreal Gazette” doubts the wisdom of charging four millions to capital. It would be better if taxes are to be depended upon to meet the cost of the navy. Then the Canadian people would see what doing their duty meant. The “Ottawa Free Press” strongly favors Canadian-built vessels, and says that, if necessary, skilled labor can be brought from Britain. The “Canadian Mail” (Conservative) says that both parties will unite with the view of perfecting the Government proposals.
