A DANGEROUS ROAD.

AVHO AVOULD BE LIABLE FOR ACCIDENTS?

The dangerous condition of a portion of tile road between Alatawnoro and Alakaraka was the subject of a waim discussion between tne Cook County Council and Air. Jex-Blake, speaking on behalf of a deputation of Avaingaite settlers, yesterday. Air. J ex-Blake said that one- could hardly drire along without capsizing unless one went very carefully. Since the Straker waggon had been in the district the abrupt rise of the crown from the sides of the road had become worse. There had been several capsizes lately. The Chairman (Captain Tucker): Ought you not to be at the Borough Council, and not here?

Air. Jex-Blake: The road is in your jurisdiction. Captain Tucker: I wonder some of those people wlio’ve been: upset don’t bring an action against the owners of the Straker waggon. The County Engineer, Air. Fraser, said the piece of road was very dangerous. but ot would cost a good deal to put it in proper shape. The crown ought to he broken up and levelled over a distance of 20 or 30 chains, which would necessitate its re-metal-ling over that space. Air. Jex-Blake: Sure’y your Council will be liab’e if some bad accident occurs after you have boon warned. Cr. Alatthews : It is not the County that would be liable. Air. Jex-Bla’ke: If I have to bring an action you will knew about it. Captain Tucker: I hope you won’t '-civ on any compensation you will get Horn us. Whether tlm Borough Council are liah’e or not.
