ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
INQUEST ON A JOCKEY
[Pun Prec3 Association.! NAPIER, Oct. 15. At the inquest on John O’Connell the evidence of jockeys and eye witnesses of the accident went to show that deceased got tangled up with Forest’s legs when he came down at the hurdle. There was no suggestion of interference. A verdict of death from fracture of the skull, with no blame attachable to anyone, was returned. CRUSHED BY A LIFT. WELLINGTON, Oct, 15. Thomas Donovan, aged 20. whose father is in the Railway Department, was accidentally killed in George Minder’s ironmongery establishment last night. He wa found this morning jambed by an electric goods lift. It is surmised he pulled the cord to bring up the lift, and was looking over to see whether it was moving, and did not notice the balance weight, .which descended on his neck. Death must have been instantaneous. He was missed about 5.30, and the premises were searched, but he could not be found. The lift could not be got to work for some little time before the employes knocked off. and it is supposed one of the wires had fused. A storeman this morning found Donovan's body blocking the mechanism. DEATH FROM HEART DISEASE. DUNEDIN, Oct. 15. Thomas Hogg, employed on the dredge Vulcan at Dunedin wharf, died suddenly this morning, presumably of heart disease.
