CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE

The Executive Committee of the Gisborne Unamber of commerce met at the Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. Mr. John 1 own ley presided, and there were also present Messrs F. W. Riach, W. A. O'Meara, J. B. Kells, J. W. Bright, and 1. H. W. Traill (secretary). A letter was received with regard to the Japan-British Exhibition, to be held in London in May. 1910, asking that the Chamber would assist in making it known among the numerous commercial associations in the district. On the motion of Mr. Townley it was resolved to send a telegram of welcome to the delegates of the Sydney Chamber on the occasion of their approaching visit to New Zealand. The delegates had been invited to Gisborne, but -were unable to accept the invitation of the local Chamber.

The subject of Imperial defence was referred to in a letter from the London Chamber of Commerce, which askedGisborne, as well as Chambers all over the Empire, to co-operato in the matter of naval and military defence.- —It was decided to reply stating that the Chamber was in entire sympathy with the project. Bankruptcy reform _was the subject of a communication from the Grevniouth Chamber, who asked that the Gisborne Chamber should endeavor to induce their member to move for an amendment of the existing Act.—On the motion of the Chariman. it was decided to write to the Hon. Jas. Carrol] on the lines suggested. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs Bright and Kells sent in a report on the uroposcd constitution of the suggested Federation of New Zealand Chamlpr.T They thought the Gisborne Chamber would do well to find out the date of the first meeting in connection with the matter and instruct a delegate to attend. Another sub-committee composed of Messrs J. R. Kirk,, Kells, and Bright reported that they 'had waited on the Union Steamship Company with regard to the passenger service between Gisborne, Napier, and Auckland. The local manager had communicated with the head office, and the reply would be given at next meeting. Messrs Riach, Townley, Kells, and Bright were deputed to arrange for a suitable function to celebrate the annual general meeting of the Chamber next month.
