Lady Auctioneers.

Over 7GO women and girls aspired to become lady auctioneers at Olympia last month, when the AYomon’s All Nations Exhibition was open. By a process of refining the 700 odd applicants had been reduced at the beginning of August to twenty-four, and these were to submit their charms and powers of oratory to a jury of experts in the balcony of Olympia. “Each applicant will be given five minutes in which to conduct an auction,” explained one of the exhibition ollicials. “She will be timed by a stopwatch, and during the five minutes will be given three objects—a crystal paperweight, a Billiken—‘that ged of things as they ought to be’—and a silver tea service—to sell. Each lady will he required to exercise her wit and eloquence on one or all these objects.” The points to be considered in voting by the experts are:—Eloquence, elocution, style, appearance, wit, and good temper.
