Smoke was.observed coming from under the roof of the store by boarders in Alessrs Douglas Bros.’ cafe, the alarm was given, and the fire got under with the aid of a few buckets of water. At 20 minutes past 2 o’clock this morning, Air. J. Railton, publisher of tbe “Gisborne Times,” was going along Gladstone Road on his way to work, when lie noticed a fire burning in the roof of Air John Nicholls’ luncheon and supper rooms, situated next to Air. PHailam’s shop, close to the comer of Bright Street. He promptly ran to the' firebell, rang an alarm, and then aroused the occupants of the shop. The Eire Brigade, under Superintendent Townley, turned out with alacrity, and quickly had a jet of water playing on the fire, which was subdued in a. few minutes. The damage done "was trifling—a hole was burned In the boarded ceiling, and the roof was somewhat injured; part of the corrugated iron had to be ripped off to enable the firemen to get at the fire. This had apparently started either in the roof or between the ceiling and the roof near the wall of Air. Hallam’s shop, and its cause seems quite unaccountable. Air. Nicholls, who lives on the premises with, his wife and child, stated he rents the premises, a one-storeyed building, from Air. G. C. Bloore, agent for. the owner. His stock and furniture are insured for £75, but last night he could not remember in-what office. Some slight damage was done to the contents of the building by water. The fire had evidently been burning for a considerable time when discovered. HOUSE BURNED NEAR CHRISTCHURCH. rPrn Phf.ss Association.! CHRISTCHURCH, October 18.
