GISBORNE SOAP WORKS.

AN IMPORTANT LOCAL INDUSTRY

A representative of this journal paid a visit recently to Messrs McAra and Wilson’s soap works at Kaiti, and was courteously shown over the premises by the proprietors. The whole plant has undergone a thorough overhaul since having been taken over by the new firm, and is now turning out about two tons of soap weekly. .Further improvements are contemplated, and it is the intention of the proprietary to shortly manufacture various adjuncts to the soapmaking trade, which will necessitate increasing the staff materially. There was on view at the time of the visit a stock of the. various brands: of soap manufactured by the firm. Among these, the “Gladstone” ‘brand, our representative was informed, has met with a ready sale, and seems to have found immediate favor with local consumers. This brand is a good quality general laundry soap, which compares more than favorably with outside brands of a like nature.

Many people labor under the delusion that by buying a cheap soap they are studying economy. It should be remembered, however,. that soap lends itself more readily than any other article to adulteration, and purchasers of an inferior quality should bear in mind that they are paying as much as 2d to 3d per lb. for water alone. The pressman was shown the different ingredients put into each, and he was convinced that it would well repay the thrifty housewife to purchase the better class of soaps. The “Sweetbriar,” a soap specially manufactured to overcome the hardness of the To Arai water, should be of inestimable benefit to householders. A pure soap, splendidly adapted for all household ancl laundry requirements, is the' “Taakitimu” brand. The “Wo’etta,” the famous oil soap, is specially adapted for washing woollen articles. “Rainbow” is a' fine all-round laundry soap, which is attractively got up in fancy cartons. Concentrated extract of soap is done up in 4oz. packets. “Washcssi” is another effective washing powder. It is claimed that if two teaspoonfuls of this are dissolved in three gallons of hot water and clothes are soaked overnight in it the greater proportion of dirt will be freed front the clothes by the morning. On the clothes being then boiled in the copper with another small quantity of “Washessi,” it will be found that little rubbing is afterwards required to complete the cleaning. A visit to the soap works will prove that there is no necessity to send outside the district for a supply of this very necessary commodity of household use, and Messrs McAra and Wilson’s enterprise should be recognised by the residents of the district.
