CHEAP GAS
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —A great deal of controversy has taken place of late in regard to the quality of the gas supplied to consumers. I was rather struck by the necessity of a local parson having to apologise to his congregation for the poor lighting of his church. Well, Sir, I roust admit that during my residence of under twenty years in Gisborne the complaints have never, to my knowledge, been so consistent and so full of merit before the advent of Mr Henry Hoare, M.1.C.E., (or TLA.T.Z.), manager and secretary to the Gisborne Gas Company, Limited, etc., ets., etc. I challenge any consumer to say that the light supplied through an ordinary Welsbach burner by the Gas Company at the present time is sufficient for a man to read by, dr a woman to sew by,, without the addition of a candle or kerosene lamp. In mentioning the fact of the poorness of the Gisborne gas, since this highly qualified official took charge, to a friend afar, the query came back, “Is your local company trying to increase its dividends by using inferior coal, the same as the — — company tried here, with disastrous results?” No doubt the coal lias a good deal to do with the matter, but the results achieved by the Gas Company during the last few months could hardly in fairness. to the manager and secretary, M.1.C.E., etc., be credited all to coal; brains must surely have a share. —I am. etc., “CONSUMER.” ■
