•*. - fPnu Press Association.l %: AUCKLAND, Oct. . 19. Drayton Grange arrived from Liverpool this morning with 64 passengers for New Zealand, including 48 steerage. The great majority are farmers with capital, eager to take up land. There aro 30 for Auckland and the balance for "Wellington.
CABINET MINISTERS AND GAMBLING.
WELLINGTON, Oct, 19. The Bantist Conference passed a resolution expressing deep indignation at the patronage given to gambling by. two Ministers of the -rown by their presence at the opening of Tattersall’s Club in this city and their defence of gambling. THE MISSING DUCO. It is understood that at an early date an inquiry, in. conformity with the Shipping and Seamen Act. will be held into' the circumstances relating to tile disappearance of the Wellington harbor ferry steamer Duco while on a voyage from Wellington! to the Chatham Islands.
COMPENSATION! AWARDED AGAINST THE RAILWAY DEPARTMENT.
An award was given by the Compensation Court this afternoon in the claim by the Wellington Woollen Manufacturing Company, Ltd, against the Railwav Department of £’3399, for land taken in connection with the widening of the Hutt railway at Petone. The award of the Court was unanimous that the respondent (Minister for Railways) should forthwith take steps at his own expense to 'Save re-vested in the claimant the land claimed to lie restored to the claimant, and that he pay £ISOO in satisfaction of th© claimant’s claim. THEET OF A BICYCLE. •
BLENHEIM, Oct. 19. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day a youth, Frederick Rose, charged with stealing in Nelson a bicycle belonging to Ernest Wood, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. Accused was already serving a similar sentence on two charges of theft at Blenheim.
BLENHEIM JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS.
Arrangements are being completed for jubilee celebrations to be held in the first week of November, commencing with a thanksgiving service _ on October .31, and including ah agricultural show, band contest, old identities’ banquet, children’s fete, Sounds excursion, etc. Large crowds of visitors are expected, including the Governor, Ministers, and members of Parliament. '
CHAIR OF THEOLOGY. DUNEDIN, October 19. At a meeting of the Dunedin Presbytery, held to-day, to consider applications for-the vacant chair of Theology in the Divinity Hall, it* was decided, virtually unanimously, to recommend the General Assembly, to appoint the Rev. John Dickie, : M.A:', of Aberdeenshire. > ’ * ‘‘ ' A RECORD PRICE FOR RABBIT SKINS.-.. . . At a sale of rabbit' skins held here this week, one bale of winter skins, weighing 3771 b, realised 4s per lb, or a total value of £66 15s. This, is claimed to be -a record price for tlio Dominion.
