THE GISBORNE CLUB

The green of the Gisborne Club is to be opened for play this afternoon. All bowlers are invited to attend, and play is to begin at 2 p.m. sharp. The green is in very good order for playing, and an enjoyable afternoon may safely be anticipated. TURANGANUI CLUB. —Challenge "Walking Stick.— Yesterday afternoon the first match game of the bowling season was played on the Turanganui Club’s green, when a commencement was made with the competition for the challenge walking stick presented by Mr. J. D. Jeune. For this trophy 23 competitors have entered, which necessitates five rounds to decide the holder of the stick. A feature of this contest is that the games are to be of six heads only. Yesterday afternoon the first round was commenced, when the game resulted — W. Ratcliffe (9) beat M. G. Nasmith junr (1). —Ratcliffe got the strength of the green at the jump, and put up two pairs, followed by two singles. His opponent secured a single on the sth head, and essayed to carry the jack for four on the sixth head but missed, and Ratcliffe obtained three. The first round is> to be continued this afternoon, and all games unplayed by Saturday afternoon will be forfeited. —Douglas Feathers.— The first round in the Douglas Feathers is to be commenced this afternoon, and must be completed by Saturday next, when all unplayed games will be forfeited. It is expected that there will be a large gathering of the members on the green this afternoon, when lady friends will be welcomed. Afternoon tea is to be provided. The green, which is considered both locallv and by visitors the finest in : -New Zealand, was in -perfect order. The Feilding bowlers last season captured all the trophies in the district. Therefore an interesting season is anticipated.
