Referring to tlie death of Jack O’Connell, the well-known jockey, who died front injuries sustained oil .the. Napier Parle racecourse the ‘‘Hawke’s Bay Herald” says : ~ “The deceased was only 31 years of age, and was married some eighteen months ago. His widow is not yet out of her teens, and has a baby a few months old. Slie will receive £4OO from the Jockey’s Insurance Fund. It is a* peculiar coincidences that the deceased’s brother William was killed at Christchurch in a similar race, also at the last fence,.and also riding a chestnut horse. A little time ago Jack had a spill in Wellington, and announced his intention Of turning the game up, meaning that thereafter he would confine his abilities as a horseman to flat races only.”
