THE WAIMATA BRIDGE.

DETAILS OF THE STRUCTURE

The plans and specifications for the new bridge over the Waimata river have been received from Mr. L. G. I . Spencer,. A.M.I.G.E. The bridge, which .js to be ol steel, and substantially bunt, is to connect McLean Street, Vhataupoko, and Hurahura Road, Kaiti. K will consist of four spans, one of 20tt at each end. and the two centre spans of 115 ft each. There will be only one pier in the centre of the river, with ample space on either side for boats to pass under abreast. The piers will be of ironbark, those in the centre being sheathed with muntz metal, and constructed so as not 1o al ow any debris coming down the river to be retained. Tho total width of the bridge is to be 23ft, sft of which will be devoted to a footway, which will be separated from the traffic portion by an ironwork division, about 4ft high. The decking of the bridge in the centre will be of two thicknesses, 2£incli heart of totara, and 2inch heart of rimu, supported on strong ironbark joists and steel girders. The decking of the land spans is to be of 43inch rimu, and ironwork I2:nches deep will form the sides of the bridge.
