WANGANUI, Oct. 23 The first annual competition by tlie public school cadets of tlie Dominion for a champion belt and medals an team shield and medals presented by the Wanganui branch of the Nationa Defence League is fixed for the 4th December. The entries close with the general secretary, at Wanganui, on November 1. LAND FOR CLOSER SETTLEMENT. HASTINGS, Oct. 23. The Kaupare estate (Flaxmere), IGBO acres, subdivided into 13 allotments, was submitted to auction this morning. Only eight allotments found purchasers. The price ranged from £33 to £55. SUDDEN DEATH NEAR PALMERSTON. PALMERSTON N., Oct. 24. Edmund Charles Woolfenden, a young unmarried man, dropped dead to-day in a fishing hut while with a fishing party at ICatarawa stream, nine miles from Palmerston. Woolfenden was a well-known resident. TWO YEARS FOR BIGAMY. WELLINGTON, Oet. 23. At the Supreme Court to-day Fredk. Henry Lambert, for bigamy, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. THE SOUTH LINE RAILWAY FATALITY. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 23. An inquest touching the death of Mrs. Delia Summerfield, who fell off the second express for the south onFriday near Templeton, was held by Mr. T. A. B. Bailey, Coroner, at the morgue this morning! A verdict was recorded that the deceased was killed by accidental!v falling off the train. The Coroner expressed sympathy with the deceased’s husband and children.
