The “’Daily Chronicle” reports that the authorities on Saturday morning closed the Racconigi shops, compelled the townsfolk to quit their dwellings, and escorted them to a field outside the town, where they -were surrounded by troops. The families of stationmasters along the Modane line were evicted from their homes and sent to hotels at State expense. MUTUAL COMPLIMENTS. King Victor Emanuel and the Czar on Sunday motored to the Royal Castle at Pollengo, and afterwards shot in the Racconigi preserves. At a banquet in the evening King Victor Emanuel welcomed the visit as “a confirmation of the" sincere friendship and concord of aims uniting our houses, Governments, and -people.” The Czar replied :“I am confident that our Governments contribute by constant, trustful co-operation, not only to the rapprochement of Italy and Russia, but also to the peace of the world.”
