ALLEGED FORGERY OF A TELEGRAM rPuR Press Association.! NAPIER, Oct. 25. Hiram Ashcroft and Arthur Hanlen again appeared at the Magistrate’s Court to-day on .a second charge of forgery of a telegram int connection with a bet on a horse race'. They pleaded not guilty, and were committed to the Supreme Court for trial. A SMUGGLING CASE. WELLINGTON, Oct. 25._ Judgment was delivered by Dr. McArthur to-day in a case in which 13. Jones, steward on the steamer Rimutakc, was charged with harboring uncustomed goods. Defendant admitted he had goods in his possession, but claimed he did not know they were liable to duty. The Magistrate decided that the defendant had committed an offence against the Customs law. If he were to be relieved from responsibility an exceedingly wide door would be opened for evading the law in question. A fine of £3O was imposed, but considering the circumstances, the fine was reduced to £lO. A MISSING MAN. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 25. Peter Wilson, a farmer, of Sheffield, is supposed' to have come to grief at Hawkins River. His horse, with the trap attached, got home, but there was no sign of Wilson. A search party was out yesterday, and made an unavailing search. THE CHRISTCHURCH MOTOR FATALITY. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day William Averill Humphreys was-charg-ed that with neglect and improper driving of a motor he caused the death of William Ostill Pavitt. Accused was remanded to October 29th, bail of £4OO being allowed, two sureties of £2OO or one of £4OO. PRESBYTERIAN GENERAL ASSEMBLY. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church commences at St. Andrew’s Church here to-morrow. The Rev. J. Jolly, of Palmerston North, delivers the inaugural address. The Assembly meets here for the first time for twelve years. A very large attendance is expected. Many ministers ami elders are on their way from all parts of the Dominion. The Assembly will lasL at least a week. THE BISHOP-ELECT OF WAIAPU. The Christchurch Diocesan Synod unanimously passed, the following motion: “That in bidding God-speed to the Ven. Archdeacon Alfred Walter Averill, this Synod desires to place on record its high appreciation of his faithful services to the Church in the diocese during the last sixteen; years, and prays that lie may long be spared to discharge the duties of the high office to which God has now called him, with the ability aud efficiency_ which he has so conspicuously shown in many and important offices he has fillet! in this diocese.” SUDDEN DEATH IN CHRISTCHURCH. An elderly man named AY. J. Grand, following the occupation of pawnbroker, was found lying dead in his shop at half-past one this afternoon. The body was lying on its face, there being indications of heart failure. Dr. Symes gave it as his opinion that death had occurred about- an hour previously. THE CANTERBURY FLOODS. In the Amberley district the losses of sheep, as far as ascertained, are: Messrs A. E. Sutton 1200, G. B. Starky 900, J. Borgfeldt 140. AST- A. 130, the total losses being estimated at 2500. Mr. .J. Ashforth, of Saltwater Creek, also had 400 unshorn sheep drowned through the river backing up and flooding his paddock. Losses are also reported from Waikarl and Ha warden. A SUCCESSFUL NEW ZEALAND STUDENT. ASHBURTON, Oct. 25. Cable advices have been received that Arthur J. Friedlander, eldest son of Mr. Hugo Friedlander, has passed liis medical examinations in all subjects at the London University, and is now a F.R.C.P. A CO-OPERATIVE BUTCHERY IN DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, Oct. 25. At a meeting held to-night, and attended by about 50 people, a motion in favor of the establishment of a cooperative butchery was carried almost unanimously. It is proposed to have a capital of £IO,OOO m £1 shares, but it is not anticipated that all the shares will bo issued at once.
