WEDNESDAY/ ' OCTOBER 20. (Before Mr W. A. Barton, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS, Two first offenders who did not appear were convicted and fined 18s with 2s costs, the amount of tlieir bail, and Hans Karlson, previously convicted on October 21, was .convicted and fined £1 in default 4 days’ imprisonment. VAGRANCY. . Lizzie Brady (Mr Burnard) was charged that she was a disorderly person witliout sufficient lawful means of support. She pleaded not guilty. Detective Ra/wle deposed that he had known the accused for the past 12 months. She had been residing with Mrs Brooking, Upper Gladstone ItOad, during the past six months. On several occasions, in consequence of complaints regarding her conduct, the witness had cautioned her regarding her mode of living. He had seen her with people of bad character and with a convicted vagrant. He had also seen her in a half-drunken condition as late as 10.30 p.m., with a mail, also in the same condition, going in the direction of Brooking’s house. The accused had told witness that she was employed by Mrs Brooking as housekeeper at los a week, and subsequently, when asked '•had said she was receiving money from : a man Harvey, and from her son m Auckland. To witness’ knowledge the 'accused liad only done one •week s woik since May last. ; Joseph Spencer, second-hand dealer, 'said he resided near Mrs" Brooking s house. He had seen "the accused; with •three men outside Mrs B took in gs house on Tuesday last, aud had previously complained about the class of ■men who were hanging about the house. ~ Const. Dandy also gave evidence as to having seen the accused with vagrant men. • Const. Pratt gave evidence as to having visited Brooking’s in consequence of a complaint he had received, and there saw a man trying to enter the house through the window. To the •knowledge of witness accused had done no work during the past six months. Sergt. Hutton gave evidence as to the manner in which the accused was living- , , , , , , Mr Burnard said that a great deal of evidence had been given that was hot relevant to the case, and he could show that the accused had received ■'money from Harvey and from her son. The accused, Lizzie Bradv, deposed that she received £4 from Wm. Harvey in the Albion Hotel on Saturday last. She had received other sums ■from Harvey and her son within the past four months, and had worked for Mr Taylor for a month at £1 per week. She had always 'had enough to keep her. _ . . To his Worship: Mrs Brooking, win. Harvey and witness were living in one room at the back of. Mrs Brookings late residence. Wm. Harvey, laborer, gave evidence as to having given the accused £4. Wm. Graham, porter at the Albion ■Hotel also gave evidence. ' ■His Worship said the defence had failed to prove: that the accused had lawful means of support. It was si most disgraceful case, -and she _ woiild be sentenced to imprisonment in Napier gaol for three months with hard labor.
