A VOLUNTEER AIOBILISATION. rPiin Press Association. l WANGANUI, October 28. The volunteers mobilised last night on a surprise signal being given by a cannon. Within lialf-an-hour there was a good muster of fully accoutred members of all corps. THE HECTOR AIEAIORIAL FUND. WELLINGTON, Oct. 28. Sir Joseph Ward informed a deputation to-day that lie would favorably recommend a proposal to subsidise the fund for a memorial to the late Sir James -Hector, colonial geologist, up to £SOO. AN HOTEL BURNED. DUNEDIN, Oct., 28.’ The Brighton Hotel, at Brighton hoacli, about 12 miles from Dunedin, was totally destroyed by fire at 8-30 this evening. It was an old wooden building, containing 14 rooms: The fire is supposed to have been started by a lighted candle setting fire to the curtains of a bedroom upstairs. The upper portion of the building was almost enveloped in flames before the owners were aware of the outbreak.- . The building and a portion of the contents were owned bv Atessrs Lane and Co., cordial manufacturers, Dunedin, and the licensee (Mr. Charles Cattanach) owned a portion of the furniture.
