POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB’S SPRING MEETING. A RECORD ATTENDANCE. President, J. W. Nolan, Esq.; vicepresident, J. Clark, Esq.; lion, treasurer, L. T. Symes, Esq. ;judge, Hon. Captain Tucker, M.L.C.; stewards, Messrs C. White, J. A. Caesar, A. F. Kennedy, J. M. Gouldsmith, J. A. Maynard, R. Sherratt, and A. Dewing; starter, Mr. Harry Piper; handicapper, Mr. H. Coyle; clerk of totalisator, Mr. W. 0. Skeet; clerk of scales, Mr. M. DeCosta; clerk of course, Mr. A. Pritchard; secretary, Mr. D. R.-DeCosta. Ideal spring weather favored the opening day of the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s spring meeting, held at Makaxaka course yesterday. There was a record attendance, including ' a great many visitors from the country, and several from other parts of the Dominion. A great numbr of ladies were present, and there was a fine display of spring toilettes, the gay colors of the dresses and parasols fo.rming a pretty contrast to the bright green sward, of the lawn. The tracing was clean, and in most cases excellent, some very interesting finishes being witnessed, -a fact which bore eloquent testimony to the work of the club’s new handicapper, Mr. H. Coyle. The 'course was in excellent condition, although a slight softness militated against fast times recorded. The improvements which have been effected on the ground added greatly to the convenience and comfort of patrons, and the new loose boxes were of great value to trainers. The new judge’s box was also a great improvement on the old one. In the absence of Hon. Captain Tucker, who is in Wellington, Mr. W. G. Sherratt was a capable judge, and the times were taken by Mr. G. W. Primrose. As usual, the arrangements were exceptionally well in hand, and the success of the meeting was in no small measure attributable to the energetic efforts of the secretary, Mr. D. R. De The stationmaster (Mr. H. J. Day) provided an excellent train service. The trains were run well up to time, and carried large numbers of people to the ground, while a good number reached the scene by vehicles of all descriptions. The luncheon arrangements were in the very capable hands of Messrs Clare and Sons, and this department was well attended to. During the afternoon an enjoyable programme of miisic was rendered from the lawn by Messrs Vita Bros.’ orchestra The sum of £4863 was put the totalisator, as against £5103 for the first day of the meeting last year. Fourteen bookmakers were licensed at a fee of £ls each, and appeared to be well patronised. The whole premises were in. a state of scrupulous cleanliness, reflecting great credit on the caretaker, Mr. G. Muir. The following are the details of the racing: TRIAL HANDICAP,' Of 50sovs; second horse lOsovs; 6 furlongs. Mr. T. W. Hackett’s b m Sublime, bv Wonderland —Heavenly Twin, 9.0 (S. Reid) ... ... 1 Mr. C. Along the back stretch the trio were still ahead of the remainder of the field, which followed in the order, The Raft, Mura Ahi, Kaumoana, Master Stead, with Te Raumeria last.
