The by-election for the Bermondsey division of Southwark, owing' to the death of Dr. Cooper, resulted: J. Dumphreys (Unionist and tariff reformer) 4278 S. H. Hughes (Liberal) 3291 Dr. Salter (Socialist) ... ....- 1435 The Opposition papers are jubilant, believing that Bermondsey is an index constitutency, always swinging in sympathy with national feeling. The “Daily Chronicle” declares that the result illustrates the failure of- the British representation system, and the need for electoral reform. A SUFFRAGIST OUTRAGE. Mrs. Chap and Miss Millans, / members of the Women’s Freedom League, entered two of the polling booths and emptied bottles of corrosive fluid, into the ballot boxes. -Only a few papers were - spoiled. The acid splashed on the face of Mr. Thorley, the presiding officer. The hospital authorities state that he will -probably lose an eye. The League admit a deliberate plot to invalidate the election, but deny that vitriol was used. [At the general election in 1906, Dr. G. Cooper (Liberal) was returned by 4775 .votes, against 3016 for H. J. C. Gust (Conservative.]
