VESSELS IN PORT

Awanui, schooner Squall, s.s.

The U.S.S. Co.’s Tarawera arrives from South to-morrow morning, and loaves later for Auckland. The Huddart-Parker Co.’s Victoria arrives from Sydney and Auckland tomorrow afternoon, and leaves during the evening for South.' The New Zealand Shipping Co. s Wain: a to, the first wool beat of the season. arrives from Auckland on Saturdav. 6th inst., to load for Home, instead of on the Bth, as previously announced. The Tyser Co.’s Niwaru is duo to load at Gisborne in time for the January wool sales, on the 12th mst. (.Messrs "Williams and Kettle, Ltd., agents.) The Shaw, Savil.l and Albion Co.’s first" boat to load at Gisborne this season will be the Kin Ora, which is due on the loth. She is to reach London in time for the January wool sales. (Messrs Common, Shelton and Co., loading agents.) The' U.S.S. Co.’s Squall, which loft Auckland-on Saturday at 1 p.m., was delayed owing to easterly weather, and only* arrived at Tologa Bay at 8.30 yesterday morning, and did not get here till about 5 p.m., coming up the river after 6 p.m. She returns to Auckland this evening. Although there is still a good shipping trade to and from t-lie Manul-cau, the Main Trunk line has undoubtedly serkuslv affected the port of Onehunga, especially in the case of the Union Company, hiiore red-funnelled vessels are not much in evidence there now (remarks the Auckland “Herald”). A little while back, for the first time m thirteen years, the assistant turncock (Mr. A. Hunt), of Onehunga, visited the wharf without having to supply water to a single ship in port. Something of a problem has to be faced by the Harbor Board authorities in 'Wellington in regard to’ the dock now in course of construction. When the dock was designed, only a few years ago, it was intended to make provision for the largest man-o’-war in existence-. but in the interim, and the dock has not been completed yet, an .'unprecedented development has taken T>hu-e in the dimensions of ships of war, with the result that the dock will not be.able to contain the largest of them, and it is considered that its utility is lessened. The problem is a serious one. and it has been given a good deal of Thought in Wellington. Some vVellington citizens tvish to Imye the dock broadened and lengthened, if necessary to meet the altered state of afEairs. It is pointed out, also, that one or iuoie Dreadnoughts may, in the course ot time, come to these waters, and there wifi be no dock, with the necessary accommodation. It is contended that neither the Calliope Dock, at Auckland, nor the dock at Hongkong is sufficiently large to deal with the latest specimens of naval architecture.
