THE MISSING WARATAH.
GABLE NEWS.
THE HAHLOTV’S REPORT
United Press Association—Copyright LONDON, Nov. 1.
The “Times” states that Lloyd’s first determined not to publish the captain of the Harlow’s fuller report owing to lack of substantiation, but private perusals aroused conjectures, justifying the publication of the report. A critical examination shows that if all was Avell the Waratah was 190 inile,s from Cape Hermes when the Harlow’s captain saw the explosions, but if an outbreak of fir© occurred during the day, the Waratah would undoubtedly have retraced her course, hugging the coast in order to beach the steamer and land the passengers. This would explain the Clan Maclntyre and Harlow sighting it, though not the Guelph. Those disbelieving the Harlow’s narrative argue that if the Waratah was ■burning and retraced her course she should have been sighted by the Clan Maclntyre, which was bound from Durban and had been passed earlier in the day. The “Times’’ adds that if the explosions were only three miles off Cape Hermes it is strange nothing was heard at the light house or wreckage found. It repeats the statement that owing to a difference of opinion between the cap-: tain and officers as to whether what the Harlow saw was hush fires, and inquiries at Durban failing to show that any ship was overdue the Harlow’s captain did not report it till he heard that the Waratah was overdue.
