To tlie Shaw, Savill and Albion Co.’s s.s. lonic, which arrived last wight from London and Plymouth, via Capetown and Hobart, belongs the distinction of being the first merchant vessel visiting New Zealftfid waters to be fitted with wireless telegraphy. The apparatus, which is the invention of Lieut. J. Holland, R.N.R., the second officer, is installed between the mam arid mizzen masts, and was fitted when the ship was last at London, as the result of an arrangement between the vessel’s owners and Lieut. Holland. On the voyage down the English Channel and' the Bay of Biscay the liner was in almost uninterrupted communication with the land, messages being received from the postal; .station at Bolt Head from the Lizard, and from Dieppe on the French coast, while a number of messages that were travelling in various directions from steameis in the north Atlantic.were recorded on the tonic’s instrument. .....
