A SUICIDE AT WHANGAREI.

Henry Beaumont, keeper of a,secondhand shop in the “AdA'oeate” buildings, committed suicide about 4 p.m. to-day. shooting himself in the head Avith V pistol. His AA-ife left him some time ago. Othenvise there is no assignable cause. He leaves three young children.

A BURGLAR SENTENCED.

NAPIER, Nov. 2. A man named DaA'id Mann, alias Wrn. Williams, alias David Jackson, alias Thomas Williamson, pleaded guiltv at the Magistrate’s Court this morning to breaking and entering a- dwelling Avith intent to commit a crime. . He appeared before Mr. Justice Sim in. the afternoon, and was sentenced to twelve months.

INDUSTRIAL ARBITRATION COURT.

The Arbitration Court- concluded its sittings to-day, and adjourned to Wellington. In the bricklayers’ dispute the parties arrived at- an agreement-, in conference, on all the points except wages. Judgment was reserved in a case in which Bull Bros, appealed against the decision of the magistrate fining them for dismissing a man from their employ on no other ground than that he was secretary of the painters’ union.

DEATH OF ALD OLD SOLDIER

WANGANUI,. Nov. 2The well-known local identity, “Jimmy” McCann, passed aAvay at the his-pit-al to-day, aged 70 years. The deceased was a Crimean and Indian Mutiny veteran, and also went through the Maori war with the 68th Regiment.

GARRISON ARTILLERY PRACTICE

WELLINGTON, Nov. 2. The Petone Navals fired a first-class firing course this morning with sixinch guns at ranges varying from 0000 yards to 4100, at towed- targets, with a mean range of 4200 yards. . Eleven rounds were fired and nine hits wens recorded, the misses being seventy and eighty yards . sliprt. number 1 gun fired its'six rounds in 4min llsec, and No. 2 gun its five rounds in 4min lOsec. The umpire considers the results very satisfactory.

HOTEL PREMISES AS DANCING SALOON.

DUNEDIN, Nov. 2.. In a prosecution against an Ophir hotelkeeper, for permitting a portion of his premises to be used as a dancing saloon, Mr. Bartholomew, following a recent English decision, held that one isolated act did not constitute using, and dismissed the information. Great; interest was shown by hotelkeepers m the case, which was regarded as a test proceeding.
