ijffiu Press Association.! 'WELLINGTON, Nov. 3. Thou<di unsettled weatner prevailed throughout the month of October, the rainfall was not generally above the average. The most remarkable event Avas the Canterbury storm on tne _2na and 23rd, which caused heavy rains and snow inland, while the southerly gale raised enormous breakers on the east coast, especially at Timaru on the 22nd: 2.7 inches of rain fell at Christchurch, 2.54 at Lincoln, and 1.2 S Hi'difield, Waiau, the total fall in these parts being treble the monthly mean. In Southland, hoAvcver, the total fail was considerably below the average. A sharp disturbance on the sth caused heavy rain, especially m Taranaki and parts of the A\ ellington district. On the 11th seA'ere aw ester ly winds brought heavv rain on the West Coast in the southern districts of the South Island. On the 16th a steady low pressure in the North alloAved an influx of cold air from the South, which cause*: a. heavy precipitation in the northern districts. On the 20th high westerly winds brought snow on Alount Egmont from an unusual quarter. At this time the barometer fell remarkaoly low all over the country, and a westerly area of loav pressure Avas joined by one from the north. After these disturbances had passed, with a cold snap, especially in the South, mild but very changeable Aveather followed until the 30th, Avhen a westerly low pressure again held SAvay, and rain followed in most parts of the country.
