NORTH ISLAND BAND CONTEST. [Pkii Rkkss .Association. I WANGANUI, Nov. 4. There is a strong probability of the famous Newtown Band (Sydney) taking part in the North Island band contest here in March next, the entries for which close on December 7th. COMPENSATION FOR AN ACCIDENT. WELLINGTON, Nov. 4. The Arbitration Court to-day awarded John Johnson, kitclienman at the new Occidental Hotel, £1 weekly during incapacity caused by an accident. Johnson had claimed a lump sum of £3OO. He had' suffered injuries through a ladder slipping from under him. The defence sought to be set up was that Johnson was suffering from the effects of a previous accident. BURGLARIES AT PETONE. Several business premises at Petone were burglariously entered between Wednesday afternoon and this morning early, in each case a window being prized open. The articles taken range from several pounds of tobacco and cigarettes to rolls of cloth. Little money was secured. THE UNION CO.’S TRAINING SHIP. The Union Company’s training ship Hartford is to leave Lyttelton in a few days for Newcastle, being fixed on charter to load l coal-for San Francisco. After discharge at the latter port, she will take in a cargo of timber at Eureka, for Australia. RAILWAY APPEAL BOARD. Mr. Clarence George Lee has been elected unopposed as a member of the North Island Railwa- Appeal Board. There were two candidates for the vacancy on . the South Island Railway Appeal Board. Mr. John Henry Jones defeated Mr. Matthias by 428 votes to 216. APPOINTMENT OF TEACHERS. Of recent years the Marlborough Education Board has adopted a system of engaging its teachers and re-appoint-ing them from year to year only. This was made the subject of an application by the New Zealand Educational Institute in the Supreme Court to-day, on an originating summons under the Declaratory Judgments Act, for interpretation of the construction of the Education Act, 1908, and its amendments and regulations as they affected the power of Boards to engage teachers. Judgment was reserved. PAKAPOO. DUNEDIN, Nov. 4. At the Police Court a Chinaman named Si On was fined £25 and costs on a charge of selling pakapoo tickets. KNOX THEOLOGICAL COLLEGE. At a meeting of the Otago and Southland Presbyterian Synod this evening, the appointment of the Rev. John Dickie to the vacant chair of Ivnox Theological College was formally made. An amendment that the Rev. Whyte, of Havelock North, bo offered the professorship lapsed for want of a seconder.
