BAD LANGUAGE.

GISBORNE MAN CONVICTED. The charge against 'Henry Eversfield of having used obscene language on Wednesday night was the subject of enquiry at the Police Court yesterday. When charged on Thursday. Eversfield had; .expressed a wish to be tried by a jury,, and was remanded for 24 hours. ~ Yesterday he was represented by Mr. L. T. Burnard, and Mr. Barton, S.M., said he would give him a chance of changing his mind as it was possible he had not understood the position. The accused, on this occasion elected to be dealt with summarily. Constables Dwyer and Johnstone stated that on the occasion of the arrest of a man named Shaw, on Wednesday night, the accused followed them and used the language complained of towards a civilian named Milne who was assisting Constable Johnstone.

William Milne, engine driver, gave corroborative evidence. By Mr. Burnard: He dicl not think, the accused would have said what he did if he liad not been excited. Mr. Burnard suggested* that, the accused had. lost his mental balance at the. time, but the fact that there were* no women, or, in fact, no people other than those concerned about at the time rendered the offence more of a private than a public nature. His Worship said there was no excuse whatever for the accused. He would be fined £2 and costs amounting to 18s, with seven days’ imprisonment in default.
