BOY SCOUTS.

NO. 1., POVERTY BAY TROOP. The Boy Scout movement is .steadily progressing in Poverty Bay. On Saturday afternoon last No. 1 Troop went out for some tracking on Waikanae Beach under Leaders Fox, Forrest and Frazer. The place of starting was from the leading light nearer the beach. Half of the boys went out first, one on horseback and the rest on foot. The one on horseback (Scout N. Lewis, Bull Patrol) was tracked for four miles, being found among the sand-bills by Leader Fox of the Rook Patrol and Scout Alenzies of the Bulls. Those on foot were difficult to track, as they crossed each others tracks, went below highwater line, and' ran across dry grass paddocks. Each of the trackers was given a trail and told to follow it. On the beach this was successfully done, but then the trail went behind the sandhills, whore it was followed for about fifty yards and then lost. Soon after Leader Forrest picked it up again, and followed it into the paddocks for some distance, until he saw the lad he was after running acrossthe .paddock, and after a short chase, came up with him. As it was still early the lads went for a walk across the A wap uni Lagoon, and some, .getting mud on their trousers, decided to go in for a bathe on the beach, after which they lit a fire, dried their trousers and went home, feeling fit for a good tea and bed. Those who went out first were under Leader Frazer. The Y.AI.C.A. patrols had instruction in the points of the compass lass week under Scoutmaster IngliS. Five recruits took the Scout’s oath. On Saturday a despatch run was held on the Kaiti hills, when one of the two despatch runners was captured by the defenders. The Wolf Patrol of the St. Andrew s troop are progressing famously. Last night was lecture night and a talk was given by the Scoutmaster on “Discipline.” Some good practice was also put in at knot tying and half-a-milo was gone over at -Scout’s Pace. Just as “Dismiss” was sounded the fire bell gave an alarm and the patrol went off at the double in the direction of the glare. On account of the distance, however, it was too late on arrival for any help to be given. .■ . This afternoon a despatch is to do run at Kaiti and Scouts will parade 2 p.m.
