In the (Hurdle Race thejockey, Pinker, was rather badly injured when First Barrel fell, and was removed to a private hospital. .rpiou Press Association.! ’ CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 6. The New Zealand Cup meeting was held at Riccarton to-day in weather that, after promising fine, proved very changeable and stormy. There were heavy showers while the first two races were being run, but then it cleared, only to set in worse just about the time of the start of the Steward’s Handicap, and the day’s racing ended in a heavy downpour of rain. The attendance vas verv rood. Lord Plunket and party were present. The racing generally was interesting, though the Stewards Handicap was marred by an accident in which North-East, Sweet Angelas, and Day beam came to grief, lhe lastnamed had his leg broken, and had to be destroyed. S. Iteid, the rider or North-East, had his collar-bone broken. War Song fell in the Welcome Stakes, and Jennins, the rider, was rather badly shaken and was unable to ride Gipsy Beiie in the Stewards’ Handicap. The tolalisator investments amounted to £29,493, against £22,956 last year, while fifteen bookmakers were licensed inside, and forty-two outside, lhe following are the results of the racing:— Spring Hurdle Handicap, 250 sovs, 2 miles— Slaney 10.4 1, Xavier 10.6 2, Southern Cross 10.1 3. Merrivonia led out of tho straight, with Bobrikoff, Downfall, Sandstream, and Grand Slam next. Rounding the top turn Downfall took charge, and he entered the straight well clear of Merrivonia, Bobrikoff, Sandstream, Roosevelt, Lady Lucy, and Field Gun, while All Red was moving up. _ Approaching the distance, Roosevelt, Field Gun, fl ud, Ladv Lucy closed on Downta l, who dropped back beaten. At the distance Ladv Lucy was in front, and won bv a length and a half from Roosevelt, with Sir Prize half a length back, then came Field Gun, Downfall, Lawn Rose, All Red, and Bobrikoff, Time, 3inin 28 3-5 Welcome Stakes, 100 sots,; for two-year-olds, 4 furlongs.—Danube 8.5 I, Madam Madcap 8.0 2, Kohinoor 8.0 3. Also started: Forinby 9.1, Formeden 8.5, Sunbonr.et 8.5, Crown Derby 8.0, War Song 8.5, King Soult 8.5, Master Laddo 8.5, Antdmette 8.0, Martyre 8.0, and Eagle 8.0. Kohinoor was leading at the distance, but there Danube came through, and stalling off a challenge by Madam Madcap won oy a good neck. Time, i3B 4-osec.

Steward’s Handicap, 750sovs, 6 furlongs.—Gold Lace 8.4 1, Penates 9.4 2, Truganini 6.10 3. Also started: North-East 8.4, Nautiform, 8.2, Gipsy .Belle 7.10, Federal 7.9, Sweet Angelus 7.5, Daybeam 7.4, Ilarita 7.4, Oiiantcuse 7.3,- Ormolu 6.13, Kilindini 6.12 (carried 7.3), Mundic 6.10 (carried 6.12), Passion 6,9, Wet Day 6.7 (carried 6.9), and Hermia 6.7. Federal and Gold Lace, Ilarita and North-East wero quickest to begin, but the last named soon, dropped back. Turning into the straight North-East was bumped and fell over the rails, and Sweet Angelus and Daybeam also came down. This caused several horses to. run wide. Meantime Gold Lace was running on comfortably in tue lead, and Avon by two lengths from Penates, avlio Avas the same distance in front of Truganini, with Ilarita fourth. Time, lmin 15 1-5 sec. For the V.R.C. meeting’s concluding day there Avas beautiful sunny weather and a large attendance. The Flemington Stakes Avont to Teringa, the New Zealand-bred Powder Puff running ninth arid Tornea last. Flavel won the Victoria Handicap in good style. For the Fisher Plate Alawa Avent out in high favor with the public, and beat Trafalgar, who led nearly all the way, in record time. Lord Nolan, the. other starter, Avas a bad third. Rotoiti fell in the Steeplechase, and Bribery, the top-weight, 13st 111 b, cantered in after the others finished. Up-to-date Avas seventh, and jumped Avell. Harvest lejl for the greater xoart of the journey, winning in equal to Drummer’s record time. The following were the results: Spring Handicap, 1$ miles. —Lady San 8. 31, Moruga 7.11 2, Bessemer 6.7 3. Three others started. Won by three-quarters of a length, a length between second and third. Floinington Stakes, 5 furlongs.—Teringa 7.10 1, Chittagong 6.9 2, Sweet Brow 7.10 3. Thirteen others started. Won by three lengths, a length between second and third. Time, lmin 2sec. V.R.C. Handicap, 1| miles. —Flavel 8.1 1, Britain 7.5 2, Aberdeen 7.9 3. Seven, others started. Won' by a length, half a length between second and third. Time, 3min 33^sec. C. B. In a field of three Trafalgar made most of the running, and seemed the winner till Ala Ava came at him, and in a splendid finish beat him by three-quarters of a length, Lora Nolan; twenty lengths behind last. Time, 2min 35Jsec. Victoria Steeplechase, about 3 miles. '—Harvest 11.0 1, Secret 9.11 2, Jackshay 10.3 3. Niue others started. Won by a length and a quarter, six lengths between second and third. Time, 6min 283 sec. Final Handicap, i* miles. —Son of the Marsh 8.13 1, Glue 7.2 2, Artillene 8.11 3. Ten others started. Son of the Marsh was always prominent.
