Hull and Grimsby have a capital of ,£4,500,000 invested in steam trawiers. These trawlers use neaiJv 2,000,000 tons of coal every year. Says the Auckland “Herald”: —The amazing negligence of the Government in allowing enormous blocks of native lands along the Main Trunk line to remain undeveloped and practically'locked against .settlement has obviously, depreciated the earning capacity of the line, and has been a heavy handicap to the administration,of our public railways. . . - We have no desire to hamper Mr Millar in the very laudable determination he has so frequently expressed of “making the railways pay. But he must surely recognise that under t]ie circumstances the only sound way of minimising the burden of the various lines which apparently cannot be made to earn three per cent, i.s to energetically develop the opportunities of promising lines and to rapidly push forward new railways which will' be sound commercial investments.
