WEST COAST RESERVES ACT.

TARANAKI NATIVES ASK FOR ITS REPEAL.

[Pick Press Association. ! WELLINGTON, Nov. 8. A large crowd of Taranaki Natives waited on the Hon. J. Carroll to-day. I)r. Pomare read a petition from a number of tribes, asking for a repeal of the West Coast Settlement Reserves Act, and the placing of the land under the ordinary Crown Grants Act. It was urged that it was a violation of the Treatv of Waitangi, and prevented the utilisation of the land bv the natives themselves, and gave power to the Public Trustee to take the lands and lease them for ever. It placed the Public Trustee in the position of a tyrant, instead of being their loving father, looking after the welfare of his children by making adequate provision for immediate needs as well as future requirements. They prayed that the leasing of their lands be not continued. The Minister, in reply, said the, Government would carefully and seriously consider the matter, and hoped to be able to remedy any serious disabilities from which the Maoris might be suffering.
