DOMINION'S POPULATION.
DEPARTURES EXCEED ARRIVALS FOR QUARTER.
According to a return in last week’s “Gazette,” published over the hand of the Registrar-General, .the, net gain.in population during the quarter ended. September 30, was 4004, which brings the total estimated population, of New Zealand up to 1,033,421. While it is gratifying to note the general increase in population, it is disappointing to find that the arrivals from oversea were less ill number than the departures. The Registrar-Gene ral’s figures show that 167 more persons left the Dominion than arrived during the last quarter. This compares most unfavorably with the figures for the corresponding quarter of last year, when the excess of arrivals over departures totalled 3117. _ The detailed immigration and emigration figures.for the two quarters m question are as follows September Quarter, 1908. Arrivals . 9296 Departures ........... 6179 \ Increase 3177 September Quarter, 1909. Departures 7538 Arrivals' 7371 Decrease ......... 167
