PRESS CABLES.

THE AUSTRALIAN SENATE INQUIRY.

United Press Association —Copyright MELBOURNE, Nov. 12.

Giving evidence before the Senate Committee on the cable service, Mr. Brook, superintendent in Victoria of the Eastern Extension Company, said the experience of his company was that business did not respond to the reduction of rates below a certain point. He had experience in New Zealand over that. The cable press business to New Zealand decreased by over 30,000 words yearly from 1900 to 1909. The proprietors of newspapers found local news more acceptable than cable news from abroad. AN INCORRECT STATEMENT. [Per Press Association.! WELLINGTON, Nov. 12. Tho statement reported in the Melbourne cables as having been made by Mr. Brooke, superintendent of the Eastern Extension Company, that press messages to New Zealand show a decline from 1900 to 1909 of 30,000 words yearly, if correctly reported, is a mistake. On the contrary the number of words received has always exceeded that number, to the extent of as much as 87,000 words on one occasion.
