COMMONWEALTH POLITICS.
AN ATTEMPT TO GAG THE PRESS.
United Press Association— Copyright MELBOURNE, Nov. 12.
In the House of Representatives Mr Bamford, supporting an amendment of the Electoral Bill in favor of prohibiting newspapers commenting on the elections between nomination and polling day, declared that previously the press stood for all that was good, and was a redressor of wrongs, but now it had descended from its high pedestal, and was actually crawling in the gutter. All papers were on the Ministerial side. The Labor party was like an Bst man going into the ring to fight a 12st man. THE FINANCIAL AGREEMENT. The proposed amendment to alter the constitution so as to give permanency to the financial agreement between the States and the Commonwealth was defeated in the House of Representatives by one vote. A number of Government supporters joined with the Labor party in an attempt to secure the alteration.
