The Government promised legislation to strengthen the laws concerning combinations which unduly enhance prices. NEW SOUTH WALES STATISTICS. SYDNEY, Nov. 13. During the past ' three months the population of the State increased by 12,696, the largest quarterly increase for many years, while the number of births is a record.
A MANCHESTER GRIEVANCE

The Manchester Association of Importers and Exporters has addressed the Chambers of Commerce of Australia, calling attention to the. clauses in Australian ’ grain charter parties, adversely affecting the ship canal and preventing direct shipments to Manchester. LORD JERSEY ILL. The Earl of Jersey, formerly Governor of Now South Wales, has had a slight attack of cerebral hemorrhage, and has cancelled his engagements for a few weeks. THE LICENSING OF PLAYS. The Lords’ and Commons’ Committee recommend a continuance of the censorship of plays, with a consultative committtee to assist the examiner, that it should be optional to seek a license, and that an unlicensed play may be performed at the manager’s risk, the Government prosecuting for indecency or impropriety.
