EAST COAST TRADES AND LABOR COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEET-ING
The East Coast Trades and Labor Council held their monthly meeting in Tcwiiley’s Hall on Saturday evening, the president (Mr. AY. Duncan.) in the chair.
A resolution was sent to the Post-master-General last January urging him to extend the distribution oi the Post Olfice Savings Bank deposit boxes to the districts outside the chief centres. A reply to that immediately fol - lowed stating that the deposit boxes were only on trial in Wellington. If the trial’was satisfactory,'the question of extending thc*.r use beyond Wellington would be considered. Notification lias just been received that the trial of the homo .savings bank has proved a success, and that the deposit boxes “for use in the homes of the people,” will be extended.
A letter from the Department of ‘Labor, Wellington, readying to a resolution’ by the" Council urging that a cadette should bo appointed to the office of the local Department of Labor was received, stating that the Minister For Labor has approved of the appointment of a lady clerk to assist in the office work of the Gisborne branch of the Department of Labor. A letter was received from Mr. A. Bugden complaining of the action of the Borough Council in dismissing him, with others, for alleged striking, without investigating the matter, and asking the Trades Council for their support. A long discussion followed, and it was finally resolved that the letter lie on the table. ' • „ A letter was received from tlm .Waterside Workers complaining of the' memo, attached to the Arbitration Court's award of the Auckland Waterside Workers. Air. T. Jackson moved, and it- was resolved —“That the East Coast Trades and Labor Council emphatically protests against the action of Judge Sim in attaching a memorandum to the Waterside Workers’ award of Auckland, casting an undue reflection on the integrity of the workers, and strongly urges the Minister of' Labor to take steps to remove the onus of blame from the workers indicated and restore to them the good name of justice.” , . . Some mention was made oi advising all unionists to take a greater interest in true- co-operation, and also of .supporting the Civil Servants Co-opera-tive Bakery" Association, with a view to extending the business in other branches. Tho matter was left ovei for further discussion at the next meeting. , , ~ Mr. J. 11. Hall gave a report of theproeeedings of the Trades Council Con°TPSS. ” Mr. Jackson moved that a committee he appointed to carefully consider the details of the borough loan proposals, rocommendatous on same to bo submitted at the next meeting. The motion was carried unanimously. It was resolved to urge all unionists to <nve th-cii* support to the City Band’s industrial and curio exhibition.
