THE AUSTRALIAN MIDDLEWEIGHT.

LONDON, October 8. The Australian middle-weight, Ted Nelson, made his debut at the National Sporting Club last Monday night in a fifteen-round contest for £IOO a side and a purse of £7O against Charlie Allum, a Londoner, who is just good enough to try out new material of moderate class. The men were matched at list., and on facing the ring the Australian had a few pounds the best in weight and a distinct advantage in height. ■ Nelson evidently possessed plenty of punching power with either hand, but unless he was performing a long way below his real form on Monday, lie is far below championship standard at or about middle-weight. Against Allum he exhibited plenty of pluck and stamina, and was the Londoner’s master at all points of the game save craft. Allum certainly fought on artful lines,, •and was always getting close for safety. The men were continually hugging each other, and seeking to give and avoid the fashionable kidney punch.-' It was, indeed, the worst cuddling match seen at the club for many a long day, and altogether a disappointment. In the little clean boxing there was during the fifteen .rounds Nelson showed himself the better man, and soon established a lead. In the ninth round he knocked Allum flat, with a clinking right-hand drive in the face. The Londoner laid for nine seconds, and everyone' thought he had received his quietus, but to the infinite surprise of Nelson and the spectators. Allum bounded .to liis feet, seemingly none the worse for the blow. He was, indeed, surprisingly strong, and playing possum, kept out of danger for the rest of the round. In the eleventh Nelson sent his rival to the boards twice, and on each occasion Allum stayed there just long enough to evade being counted out. In the last three- rounds the business was a trifle cleaner, both men making a real attempt to open out and box. At this game Nelson s,cored well, and at the conclusion received the verdict. He had had that in safe keeping, barring a knock-out, at any time after the third round.
