The “Daily Telegraph” announces that Air. Herbert Gladstone lias accepted the Governor-Generalship of South Africa.
[The “Daily Telegraph” is a Unionist journal. The appointment of Air. Herbert Gladstone to the important position of first Governor-General of the South African Union raised a chorus of criticism and .protest when it was first mooted. It was generally felt that Lord Selborne, tho present High Commissioner for South Africa, who has rendered splendid service towards bringing about the present satisfactory relations between British and Dutch, had a claim on the position, and considerable astonishment and chagrin were expressed when it became known, that ho was to be passed over in favor of a comparatively undistinguished party politician.]
