PRIMAGE PROTEST.
(Per Press Association.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Nov. 20. The Taranaki Chamber of Commerce passed a resolution that it considers the primage duty unworkable and irritating arid suggesting that if primage must be collected it should apply to all importations dutiable or otherwise, and be paid at the time of the import entries being passed. HOUSE BURNED AT NAPIER. NAPIER, Nov. 21. A four-roomed wooden cottage, in a right-of-way off Bower Street, _ was gutted by fire at 10 o’clock last night, in the abesnee of Mr. James Snowsell, the occupier, who had left everything safe. The building was owned by Mrs. J. Griffin,' and was insured for £250 in the Norwich Union office. Mr. Snowsell had an insurance of £135 in the State office on his furniture and effects. ASSAULT ON CHILDREN. PALMERSTON N., Nov. 20. Frederick Gillett, surveyor, aged about 68, a well known resident, was arrested this morning on three charges of assault on children of tender years. LIQUOR IN NO-LICENSE AREA. MASTERTON, Nov. 20. Richard Haviland was fined £35 and costs at the Magistrate’s Court for keeping liquor for sale in a no-lioense area. SOCIETY OF ACCOUNTANTS. It is reported that the South Westland steamer mail service has changed hands, the former tenderers, with the Jane Douglas, being supplanted by local tenderers with the Mangapapa. WATER POWER RIGHTS. As a sequel to the abandonment of an application for power rights at Toroha two 40-liead rights were yesterday applied for in the same locality for the purpose cf bringing water on to the Rimu goldfields by a gravitation scheme. The estimated cost of the undertaking is £150,000. In connection with the water power regulation the County chairman has suggested through the member for Westland that the Government should set up a Board of experts in alluvial gold mining to review the regulations as far as the same affect the industry with the view of making them fair to mining, fair to the country, and attractive to capital. GREYMOUTH COAL TROUBLE. GREYMOUTH, Nov. 20. As a result of the meeting last night it was announced to-day that the State miners as a body are totally against striking, if there is any possibility of a *• settlement without extreme measures. A settlement on Monday is expected. PROTEST FROM RAILWAY SERVANTS. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 20. At a general meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants the following resolution was darrkjd: “That this meeting regrets that artisans and others are being dismissed from the Government workshops, thereby causing a large amount of valuable machinery to lie practically idle, while at the same time work which would employ both the said machinery and employees whose services have been dispensed with has been let to private firms. The meeting considers the members of Parliament for Canterbury should urge upon the Government the necessity of putting work in hand which would provide employment for those being • dis-. charged.”
EARTHQUAKE AT INVERCARGILL
INVERCARGILL, Nov. 20.
A pronounced earthquake was felt •liere and at the Bluff at 5 o’clock this morning.. The motion was apparently west to east, and the earthquake was accompanied by an audible rumbling.
