MONTHLY REPORT
The “Labor Journal” reports as fo - lo ws:—Gisborne: Trade m nearly all branches has improved very much dmiprt the month. No doubt the show and race week has been partly the cause, but there is ample evidence that ' )USI ness is improving in every direction. The hopeful outlook given by the market value of the different agricultural and pastoral products has had its effect on the general trade of'the tor n, mid there is every sign of a prosperous season. Building trades: Bricklaying is not busy, hub. there are seveial contracts coming out which' should bring about employment in the neai future. Carpentry and joinery: A great improvement is evident m this trade, all hands are busv, and there is every prospect of continuous work for some time to came. Painting still keeps busy ; all hands are fully employed. PlasterinmMVcrv little doing at present, and trade in this line is likely to be dull, until some of 'the proposed new buildings are advanced. Plumbing and gasLittinn • An improvement is shown in tins trade; all hands are busy. ‘Woodworking trades: Cabinetmaking and unholster inV has improved during the month, and all hands are busy. Sash and door factories are dull, but as the building trade lias generally improved, business should increase. Sawmilling very dull; most of the timber is imported. Woodturning. etc., slightly improved'during the month, but is not busy. .Engineering trades: Agricultural implement maTkinw: Business increased, all hands are fuTlv employed. Electrical Engineering still dull.. Fitting and turning fairly busv, all bands fully employed. Leather trades: Bootmaking .(repair shops) busy. Saddlery and harnessmaking; Trade is still improving but, has not yet reached the standard ot other years. Clothing trades: Dressmaking and millinery very busy; most of the firms are working overtime. Tailoring (order): A Very great improvement is shown, and a good deal of overtime has been worked during the month. Retail trades—Clothing: Trade is good, and promises well for the, future. Boots rather dull,, but improved sin.se last report. Drapery: Good business has been done during, the mouth. Groceries: Trade has slightly improved during the month, but is not
up to usual for this time of the year. Printing trades: Printing busy, Im.t there is no opening for extra hands. Meat freezing, etc.: The season is justopening, and is likely to be a busy one. Coach building trades: Blacksmith in g. still busy. Coach, carriage, and traincar building very busy, and is likely to be so for some time. The blacksmithing and painting branches are particularly busy. Cycle and motor ,• trades show an improvement, but the roads are. still lin'd as the result of the recent; rains, and until they improve trade Will be dull. Agricultural operations: Farming, dairying, etc., promise well!.. The stock in-the country is reported in good condition, and everything points to a prosperous period. Unskilled Labor:"There has been au increased demand for men used to agricultural work, but- there is still a number of names of men on the book wanting employment! The laborer nob used to station work has very little chance oi employment, as there are no works going on in the district. A number or men have come to Osborne'expecting to get work on the railway, from which a number of men have recently been discharged. No doubt, as the season advances work will become more plentiful, and the men now idle will find employment. .
