A petition praying the Government to exercise the prerogative of mercy in. the ease of Roberts, condemned to death for the murder of Alice Edith Newman, is being prepared, and is to be ready for signature to-morrow. Mr. W. J. Hunter, who defended Roberts, and who is preparing the petition, was called upon by several people to-dayj who desired to sign it.
