MR. CHURCHILL’S TARIFF MANIFESTO.

Mr. Winston Churchill, in a column manifesto, purposes proving that a 10 per cent, duty on imported manufacturers, which apparently would yield £14,300,00 would only yield £3,750,000 after re-exports, drawbacks upon re-exportations of .partly-manufac-tured articles, lesser imperts owing to increased' British and colonial production, and cost of collection had been taken into account. If the British manufacturers rose prices by 5 per cent, consumers would be. mulcted to the extent of £50,000,000-to secure a revenue of £3,750,000. ;

EFFECT OF THE BUDGET ON ENTERPRISE.

Mr. George Wyndham, speaking at Driffield, said that what was wanted was British capital to be put into British industry, so that the British artisan might earn a living wage. During nine months of 1908, he said, £42,0ud,000 was subscribed'in Britain for Home enterprises abroad. During nine months of this year, since the introduction of the Budget, '£132,000,000' was 'subscribed, of which £16,000,000 was for Home enterprises. British manufacturers •ould not go on on these terms.
