A BOATING FATALITY.

FOl'P. LIVES LOST.

[Pen Puess Association.! CHRISTCHURCH, Nor. 24. A sad boating accident resulting in the deatli of four persons occurred at the mouth of the Rakaia river yesterday afternoon. It appears that- Mrs. Baxter, Miss Rountree, and Messrs James Baxter, •Thomas Hannah, and Harvey Hannah, were rowing on the river near the mouth in a punt. Presumably they got too near the mouth of the river, ana were swept out to sea by the stream, and the boat unset. The only one of the party saved was Baxter, and he is in a yery precarious state. Till a late hour last evening he had not recovered consciousness. The only witnesses of the accident were two brothers, named Carnes. Four of the victims were well known residents of Soutkhrdige, and Miss Rountree had gone there on Saturday to spend a holiday.
