JOHNSON-KETCHEL ■ CONTEST
American accounts of the JohnsonIvetcliel contest for the heavy-weight boxing championshii> of the world show that Ketchel was completely outclass- • ed. Johnson played with his man for eleven rounds, Ketchel appearing to be overwhelmed with the negro’s cleverness and strength. Hero is the “Referee’s” special commissioner’s account of the . final ,round : --“The closing round was, a sensational one, and at the same time, a .peculiar, one. 'litre, -is.-the- wayJt'w-eht, : Johnson for several rounds stood statue-like in the beginning, and then suddenly snapped at Ketch eRs face with; lefts that Vslipt' hi as straight as -a'die... In this particular found .jKetchel went at Johnson the moment the gong ra.ng v Johnson‘hiet him w'ith one" of his left prods, and someone in Ketchel’s corner yelled, ‘Now then, Stanley!’ Ketchel started a giant swing with the right, and his glove curved around Johnson’s neck. Johnson fell clumsily to :• the floor close to w r her© the writer, sat, and I noticed a grin on his face as lie went down. He did not remain down an instant, but jumped up quickly and turned to meet 'Ketchel’s rush. Ketchel tairly impaled himself on Johnson’s fast fiyj iim fists, .fell, and was counted out. Solne, doubts were expressed as to the genuineness ,of the contest, especially .as to the, knockdown of' Johnson, ana as to whether Ketchel was’/' really “knocked' out,” but it appears to be generally conceded that everything was fair and above board. ’ '
