LEAVING THE NAVY..
FORTY PIONEER MEN PAID OFF.
“I was very surprised to learn the other day ,on first-class authority, said Air. Taylor, in.the House of Representatives last week, “that quite recently forty men were paid off from the man-of-war Pioneer, arter having served their term, and that they received £10,000; representing each, that had accrued/ .'this. being the amount payable to them on the New Zealand scale of wages. I was told that not one of these men is willing to remain in one of. His Alajesty’s ships, and the whole forty of them left the navy.’’ Tne Minister: They got their pay. The moral that Air. Taylor drew was ' that we should find out why they all left, and if they could be induced to remain in some vessel in the Australian squadron; and, if not, offer them some special advantage to remain in New Zealand, as they would be very valuable for defence purposes, especially if they formed a naval reserve.
