There has been a great deal of activity among the fruit growers at Rarotonga (writes the correspondent of the Auckland' ‘“Star”) owing to exceptionally high prices being paid for bananas. Copra has also advanced locally; and the planters should have done remarkably "'ell during the past season-, as, in addition to the high prices prevailing, they have shipped' larger quantities .of fruit this year, owing to the Wellington service. Previously it was impossible to ship all the fruit, as considerable quantities ripened during the interval between the departure of each heat. A Ngunguru correspondent writes to the Auckland “Herald” : “Shipping to and from this port has been much brisker this week, owing to the increased demand for coal, caused through the strike at Newcastle. It is understood that many scows, now trading from Whangarei to Auckland, will he -despatched ..to thi.s port in the course of a few days, as the mines here are able to put out a considerable amount of coal more than usual.” A. new rule in connection .'with lifesaving appliances on ships is gazetted. The rule in question provides that in the case of foreign-going passenger steamers or emigrant .ships at present required to carry mere than four boat o placed under davits a motor lifeboat may .be substituted for one such boat. The motor boat must he approved by the Marine Department, and. proper appliances for putting the same into the water must be provided. The lifeboat must also- be adequately vided with fuel, and kept so. as- to be, atf all times, fit and ready for use. Great progress- .has been made .by Hull of late as a port for discharging wool from ocean liners. No dock dues are charged by the Hull and Barnsley Railway Company, which.' owns the docks. •••This greatly facilitates the process of ; delivering the cargo cheaply at Bradford. Steamers from the River 'Plate are likely to discharge at 'Hull in increasing numbers, following .the example of Australian liners. BY TELEGRAPH. AUCKLAND, Nov. 29.
