EXPLOSION IN A MINE.

MINER’S PLUCK AND ENDUtt-

ANCE

■ A. Alsen, who was working at Tully and Hatten’s copp'er mine."on Doradilla holding, Bourke (N.S.W.), met with a terrible accident last week through an explosion. -It appears that Alsen, who was working alone at the time, was putting down a charge of gelignite, which became caught, and while tapping it into position an explosion occurred. He was struck with terrible force, portions of his anatomy being shattered. Fortunately, his legs and one arm were less injured than other parts, and he not only climbed 209 feet out of the shaft, but managed to walk to his home, half a mile away, suffering intense agony. He was attended to as well as his terrible condition would allow, and then brought ■to Bourke, a distance of about. 40 miles, on a tricycle, and admitted to the Bourke Hospital. It was found by the • medical officer that:,Alsen was in a fearful condition. One eye was so badly injured that the sight will probably be lost. His pelvis was broken, and one arm was stripped of flesh. His abdominal injuries were shocking and gravel was embedded in the flesh and bone in manv places. In fact, hardly a portion of the man’s ,body was not injured in some way.
