He was a’ bright- clean looking, oldgentleman. and lie stated his grievance the Wellington Benevolent Trustees. to Although he amused them, they were sympathetic. He had previously decided to leaver the Ohiro Home and to again live outside on his old age pension. He wanted to know where his socks and shirts and desired information about a new suit the master had promised him. He had takenfourteen shirts ahd twelve pairs of socks into the Home two years ago, and now he had no change of apparel. The Trustees were' amused at the recital and the chairman said he himself had never possessed half so many garments at one time. In fact, he had many times taken his only shirt off to dry before a camp 'fire. Another Trustee augmented this bit of personal history by saying that some of the Trustees had “stayed in bed while their solo shirt was in the wash.” The old gentleman then related how he had pioneered, and' spoke of the Australian gold rushes of 1852 and how he had come to New Zealand with a Union "Bank draft for £2300, how this had grown to a.fortune.on the Thames goldfields, and how he had lost it all. “But,” lie finished, “this is beside the question.
