Cadbury Brothers are suing tbe ‘•'Standard” for libel published on September 28, 1908, commenting on tho Cadburys’ delay in ceasing to purchase the cheap St. Thome cocoa. Sir EdAvard Grey gave evidence, in which ho stated that Mr Cadbury had asked him to tako steps to stop the scandal in 1906. Sir Edward Grey advised that they should not agitate publicly until the" Foreign Office had approached Portugal. [A sensation was created in 1908 by the publication of.a Foreign Office report stating that thousands of negro laborers were taken by force to the island of San Thome to work on the cocoa plantations. In consequence of this Cadbury Bros, stopped purchasing cocoa from the island.]
